EIF Breast Cancer Biomarker Discovery Project

Denim Day® funds will support the EIF Breast Cancer Biomarker Discovery Project—a multiyear effort led by world-class scientists to develop a blood test for the early detection of breast cancer. This project is an unprecedented collaboration between nationally and internationally recognized scientific leaders focused on a singular goal—to discover biomarkers that can detect breast cancer when it can be cured.

The EIF Breast Cancer Biomarker Discovery Project is led by Dr. Lee Hartwell of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, a recipient of the 2001 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine.

The initiative is led by Dr. Lee Hartwell of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, a recipient of the 2001 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. Dr. Hartwell identified "checkpoint" genes that provided important clues to cancers that arise from abnormal, uncontrolled cell growth. His discoveries have led him and other scientists to explore ways to stop abnormal cells from dividing. Researchers hope this work will lead to new and better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer.
